Why skate for Breast Cancer Awareness?

When Coach Erika Amundsen first formed Tropical Spice On Ice there were twelve members. Of those twelve, there are still six original members skating with the team.
One of the charter members, Janeece Owen was diagnosed with breast cancer at age 42. After a valiant 3 year battle with the disease, she passed away at age 45. Her cancer was detected after it had metastasized. If it had been detected earlier, she could possibly be with us today.
Much to the horror of the group, four other team members have been diagnosed with this insidious disease. Unfortunately, Susan Evans passed away in July, 2007. Susan fought the disease with dignity and fortitude. She was an inspiration to all who knew her. A third member is now fighting Stage 4 breast cancer with mets to brain, lungs and liver.
From these experiences, the team wants to get the word out that early detection is so important. Therefore, all performances by Tropical Spice On Ice are dedicated to the importance of the awareness of early detection of breast cancer by self-examination and mammograms.
